Pi Sigma Alpha – The National Political Science Honor Society
Junior and Senior Political Science majors who meet the academic requirements will be offered membership in the Omicron chapter of Pi Sigma Alpha. A one-time fee is required for lifetime membership in the organization. New members will be recognized each Spring in an induction ceremony and luncheon hosted by Political Science faculty. Academic requirements:
- Student has completed 60 credit hours toward graduation
- Student has completed 10 semester-credits of work in political science including at least one upper-division course, with an average grade of B or higher in those courses
- Student has achieved an overall GPA placing them in the top one-third of their whole class (i.e., junior or senior class)
Political Science Club
The PoliSci Club is a non-partisan student organization dedicated to voter education, encouraging a civil political discourse, and connecting alumni with current students. The PoliSci Club encourages all UNC Asheville students to realize the influence of political science and aid in the non-partisan volunteer efforts throughout campus and the local community. The club partners with organizations and offices, both local and national, to bring speakers and political candidates to campus to speak directly to students. UNC Asheville Model United Nations
The Purpose of the Model UN team is to allow students an opportunity to experience the importance of global citizenship and governance, as embodied by the United Nations. Students gain this experience through both an oral and a written perspective, and will attend at least one conference each semester where they will represent any given nation. Members are given the opportunity to engage in in-depth research, position paper writing, debating, and moderating. During the conferences, students actively engage in committee proceedings and the drafting of mock UN resolutions. From this experience, students gain international awareness and an understanding of the importance of international cooperation in forming an global society among Member States. Amnesty International
Amnesty International is a global grassroots movement that demands the human rights of people all over the world. College level and community local groups work together to combat and change laws on refugees, reproductive rights, LGBT equality, free speech, the death penalty, and other critical human rights issues through mobilization, research, and advocacy. Amnesty International has won a Nobel Peace Prize for their work and encourages people to stay engage and critically think about the rhetoric and actions of our global powers. Whenever justice, truth, dignity, and freedom are denied, AI works to provide protection- no matter the race, religion, or demographics of people. UNC Asheville’s student chapter of Amnesty International sponsors the annual Human Rights Film Festival on campus.
ACLU of UNCA
The purpose of the UNCA-ACLU Student Chapter is to defend and raise awareness of the inalienable rights guaranteed to all of us by the United States Constitution. These civil rights include, but are not limited to: the right to academic freedom, free speech and expression, personal autonomy, equal protection under the law, and freedom from discrimination. We aim to host events and forums to further awareness and understanding of these rights on campus, as well as open dialogues with University of North Carolina administration, student organizations, and the local, regional and national branches of the American Civil Liberties Union.
College Republicans
The purpose of the University of North Carolina at Asheville College Republicans is to make known and promote the principles of the Republican Party among members of the UNCA campus and community. Additionally, members aid in the election of Republican candidates for local, state, and federal offices. Active members will see a development in their political skills and leadership abilities in preparation for future service to their community.
